Children are creative entities awaiting to release their imagination and transpose it into fun crafts that will keep them entertained and connected with the environment. Anything that arouses their senses, stimulates their interest and creative juices can trigger their wonderful enthusiasm which we all adore to see more often and surround ourselves with. There are multiple methods of connecting with a child’s creativity but painting has been proven to be a very effective one. Consider teaching your little one how to mix various hues with a sponge or empty tissue paper rolls to exercise their imagination. This way, the idea that one has to stick to a paintbrush in order to create a masterpiece, will be transpired to to them as a narrow minded way of thinking. Finger painting will enable youngsters to express their true feelings on canvas while teaching them to transfer what they see in nature on paper, developing their focal ability and enhancing their sense of environmental awareness.

Traditionally, paint was transferred to the painting surface using paintbrushes, but there are other methods, including using palette knives and rags. Oil paint remains wet longer than many other types of artists’ materials, enabling the artist to change the color, texture or form of the figure. At times, the painter might even remove an entire layer of paint and begin anew. This can be done with a rag and some turpentine for a time while the paint is wet, but after a while the hardened layer must be scraped. Oil paint dries byoxidation, not evaporation, and is usually dry to the touch within a span of two weeks (some colors dry within days). It is generally dry enough to be varnished in six months to a year. Art conservators do not consider an oil painting completely dry until it is 60 to 80 years old.

In recent years, water miscible oil paint has come to prominence and, to some extent, replaced traditional oil paint. Water-soluble paints contain an emulsifier that allows them to be thinned with water rather than paint thinner, and allows very fast drying times (1–3 days) when compared with traditional oils (1–3 weeks).

Recommend Paints For Kids Art Projects:

Finger Paints – usually slippery, tacky feeling and transparent. Best when used on thick paper products.

Tempera Paints– comes opaque and thick feeling. Best used only on paper products. Dries usually matt finish. Comes in liquid and powder form. Caution: I don’t recommend powders be mixed around young children.

Watercolor Paints– translucent, mixes with water and is very watery. Best used on thick watercolor paper that absorbs lots of water.

Acrylic Paints – thick and opaque, can be thinned with just water. Best used on paper, wood and canvases. Dries glossy to semi-glossy.
