101 DIY IDEAS FOR PAPER MACHE ARTS AND CRAFTS FOR KIDS

Author: DOMINIQUE HOLMES
Saulo Moreno Hernandez internationally known artist, created a style of his own with wire structured papier mache sculptures that he called alambroides.

Moreno traveled around the country working on labeling walls until he got tired and decided to go back to his hometown and pursue his artistic vocation.

It took Saulo Moreno years of hard work to make himself a name but his perseverance and enormous talent paid him off.

His art has been mentioned in books like “20 Centuries of Mexican Art” and many Folk Art scholars recognize him as one of the most outstanding artists in Mexico nowadays.

Even though Saulo Moreno is recognized internationally for his amazing talent and creativity he often says he doesn’t charge like an artist because he would feel as if he was stealing, and that all he wants, is for people to be happy when they see his sculptures.

Moreno believes artists have to share their knowledge therefore he began teaching his technique in the 1980’s.

Destiny took him to Tlalpujahua a small village in Michoacan where he met his wife and settled there with her. He has 5 children. The eldest, Mario Moreno, inherited his father talent and having the best teacher to learn from, has began his own journey into the art world.

One of our favourite papier mache artists is Mexican Sergio Bustamante. We felt this site would not be complete without some pictures of his fantastic papier mache works. His pieces are an inspiration and a delight to look at.

Though born in Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico, Sergio Bustamante has lived in the Guadalajara area since early childhood. In his youth, he studied architecture at the University of Guadalajara, but abandoned this pursuit when his talents and interests drew him to the fine arts and crafts. He began with paintings and paper mache figures, inaugurating the first exhibit of his works at the Galeria Misracha in Mexico City in 1966. In the early 1970’s, he traveled to Amsterdam, where he further developed his talents. After his return to Guadalajara, he established in 1975, along with other artists, the “Family Workshop Studio” in Tlaquepaque, Jalisco, Mexico.

While Bustamante’s works initially focused on painting and paper mache, his talents inevitably led, in the mid-1970’s, to the creation of sculptures in wood and bronze, many reflecting animal themes. 1979 marked the inauguration of innovative furniture designs in wood and glass with bronze accents, currently available in distinctive patterns and motifs.

The creation of ceramic sculptures in the mid-1980’s provided avenues for the use of color and form in ways not previously explored.

In 1992, the initiation of an extensive line of exquisite jewelry in bronze, gold and silver, many set with precious and semi-precious stones and, again, often reflecting animal themes, marked a new and expansive direction for his creations. In this same year, a new series of paper mache sculptures was introduced. In the new millennium, Bustamante continues to explore uncharted paths for the further expression of his uniquely imaginative and gifted talents.

Papier-mâché (French [papje maʃe]; English /ˌpæpi. ˈmæʃ/ or /ˌppər məˈʃ/), French for “chewed paper”, is a composite material consisting of paper pieces or pulp, sometimes reinforced with textiles, bound with an adhesive, such as glue, starch, or wallpaper paste.

Starting around 1725 in Europe, gilded papier-mâché began to appear as a low-cost alternative to similarly treated plasteror carved wood in architecture. Henry Clay of Birmingham, England, patented a process for treating laminated sheets of paper with linseed oil to produce waterproof panels in 1772. These sheets were used for building coach door panels, amongst other structural uses. Theodore Jennens patented a process in 1847 for steaming and pressing these laminated sheets into various shapes, which were then used to manufacture trays, chair backs, and structural panels, usually laid over a wood or metal armature for strength. The papier-mâché was smoothed and lacquered, or finished with a pearl shell finish. The industry lasted through the 19th century. Russia had a thriving industry in ornamental papier-mâché. A large assortment of painted Russian papier-mâché items appear in a Tiffany & Co. catalog from 1893. Martin Travers the English ecclesiastical designer made much use of papier-mâché for his church furnishings in the 1930s.

Papier-mâché has been used for doll heads starting as early as 1540, molded in two parts from a mixture of paper pulp, clay, and plaster, and then glued together, with the head then smoothed, painted and varnished

One common item made in the 19th century in America was the paper canoe, most famously made by Waters & Sons of Troy, New York. The invention of the continuous sheet paper machine allows paper sheets to be made of any length, and this made an ideal material for building a seamless boat hull. The paper of the time was significantly stretchier than modern paper, especially when damp, and this was used to good effect in the manufacture of paper boats. A layer of thick, dampened paper was placed over a hull mold and tacked down at the edges. A layer of glue was added, allowed to dry, and sanded down. Additional layers of paper and glue could be added to achieve the desired thickness, and cloth could be added as well to provide additional strength and stiffness. The final product was trimmed, reinforced with wooden strips at the keel and gunwales to provide stiffness, and waterproofed. Paper racing shells were highly competitive during the late 19th century. Few examples of paper boats survived. One of the best known paper boats was the canoe, the “Maria Theresa,” used by Nathaniel Holmes Bishop to travel from New York to Florida in 1874–75. An account of his travels was published in the book “Voyage of the Paper Canoe.”

Papier-mâché panels were used in the late 19th century and early 20th century to produce lightweight domes, used primarily for observatories. The domes were constructed over a wooden or iron framework, and the first ones were made by the same manufacturer that made the early paper boats, Waters & Sons. The domes used in observatories had to be light in weight so that they could easily be rotated to position the telescope opening in any direction, and large enough so that it could cover the large refractor telescopes in use at the time

As a child in grade school I remember the vary first time my art teacher  introduced me to paper mache for the vary first time. I thought is was the most coolest thing. These are really great ideas and instructions on how to  get you and your child off on the right track to paper mache crafts.

Younger children may or may not enjoy making these crafts.  It depends on if they enjoy getting gooey.  If you’re willing to give the little ones a fair amount of one on one help, the paper mache and painting portions of these crafts can be rewarding for children as young as age 3.

But if you’re looking for a fairly solo project for the kids or if you’re working with a large group, stick to the age ratings suggested.  (If the group is very large or the kids are new to crafting, you may want to even add a year or two to the age rating).

PAPER MACHE BOWLS – ONE OF A KIND GIFT FOR KIDS TO MAKE AND GIVE

A paper mache bowl a really creative and inexpensive gift for kids to make and give.  The process does require a bit of time, because of the drying time, but the results are gorgeous!

When I was pondering some ideas for homemade Mother’s Day gifts that we could make here in my home daycare, Paper Mache Bowls came to mind.   I envisioned a small colourful bowl that could hold house-keys, loose change, paper clips… you get the idea.

Now, I’d never done a paper mache project with toddlers and pre-schoolers before.  In fact, I hadn’t done any paper mache since high school (several decades ago), so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I’m happy to say, I was beyond thrilled with our homemade bowls turned out!

Paper Mache Bowls for Kids to Make for Mother's Day

Aren’t they gorgeous?

Prepare your bowls:

I dug a few plastic bowls out of our camping gear, and covered them with plastic wrap (tape your plastic wrap in place to secure).  I’ve also heard you can cover your bowls with a thin layer of petroleum jelly.  Personally, I thought the plastic wrap sounded like the easier method.  This step is necessary so that you can release your paper mache bowl from your plastic one once it’s dry.

How to make paper mache paste:

ingredients for paper mache paste

I mixed up a “paper mache paste” using about a cup of flour and some water.  Just add enough water, and whisk smooth until you have something that resembles thin pancake batter or wallpaper paste.  I added a couple of tsps of salt to prevent mold from growing.

You can use cut up strips of construction paper or newspaper or paper bags.  We used paper bags.

Dip your strips into the paste, run the strip through your fingers to remove excess paste, and mould the strip to the bowl.  Continue until your bowl is covered.

I set the bowls upside down over some jars, and set them by the fire for 24 hours.  They were fairly fragile when they were dry so we added another 2 layers of strips of the paper pieces, and let them dry for another day or two.  When I was certain that they were completely dry, we popped them off the plastic bowls, and I cleaned up the edges with some scissors where necessary.

Decorating your bowls:

Today the colourful, creativie fun began  Each Hooligan chose a colour for the outside of their bowl and a different colour for the inside, and they set to work painting them up.   I left their colour choices completely up to them wanting each of them to have the opportunity to use whatever colour scheme they desired.   We used acrylic craft paint and a blast with the hairdryer had them dry in no time.

Toddler painting paper mache bowl

Then they decorated them with their choices of accent colours.  Another blast with the hairdryer and they were ready for a coat of sealant.  I brushed a coat of clear craft sealant over the inside and the outside of the bowls, and they dried quickly.

What a beautiful gift for a child to make and give!

If your child would like to make his or her bowl extra special before giving it to Mom, how about filling it with these homemade bath bombs from Red Ted Art.

Happy Mother’s Day to all of you amazing moms out there!  Have a wonderful day!
